Abraham Lincoln's World Famous Letter to his Son's Teacher

He will have to learn, I know,
that all men are not just,
all men are not true.
But teach him also that
for every scoundrel there is a hero;
that for every selfish Politician,
there is a dedicated leader…
Teach him for every enemy there is a friend,

Steer him away from envy,
if you can,
teach him the secret of
quiet laughter.

Let him learn early that
the bullies are the easiest to lick…
Teach him, if you can,
the wonder of books…
But also give him quiet time
to ponder the eternal mystery of birds in the sky,
bees in the sun,
and the flowers on a green hillside.

In the school teach him
it is far honourable to fail
than to cheat…
Teach him to have faith
in his own ideas,
even if everyone tells him
they are wrong…
Teach him to be gentle
with gentle people,
and tough with the tough.

Try to give my son
the strength not to follow the crowd
when everyone is getting on the band wagon…
Teach him to listen to all men…
but teach him also to filter
all he hears on a screen of truth,
and take only the good
that comes through.

Teach him if you can,
how to laugh when he is sad…
Teach him there is no shame in tears,
Teach him to scoff at cynics
and to beware of too much sweetness…
Teach him to sell his brawn
and brain to the highest bidders
but never to put a price-tag
on his heart and soul.

Teach him to close his ears
to a howling mob
and to stand and fight
if he thinks he’s right.
Treat him gently,
but do not cuddle him,
because only the test
of fire makes fine steel.

Let him have the courage
to be impatient…
let him have the patience to be brave.
Teach him always
to have sublime faith in himself,
because then he will have
sublime faith in mankind.

This is a big order,
but see what you can do…
He is such a fine little fellow,
my son!

  1. With age comes wisdom, with wisdom comes regrets,
Wish that someone came up to his own little fellow,
Held his hand with love and guided him on his way,
Like Abraham Lincoln asked for his son:
We'd leave a legacy to this world, unsaid, unsung.

  6. Can anyone be sure that a teacher would be such a influential person in anyone's life. I guess a teacher only teaches his some subjects may be 1 or 2 years. He cannot teach all what Mr. Lincoln asks him to teach his child. I believe these things have to taught by the parents not teachers. Do not let anyone else do the things that you are supposed to teach your children. I think this letter is an example of giving one's own duty to others. And as said in the letter don't continue to follow the mass saying "this letter is excellent" b'coz everyone knows this cannot be practical. BE REAL!

    1. The teachers of today have been reduced to teaching just one subject for 40 minutes every day. To be honest, they are just 'lecturers'. Real teachers were the ones in the past. The ones who are moral guides to their students. And those are the teachers for whom Islam has taught us utmost reverence. Those teachers used to spend the whole day with their students; they shaped them up in every aspect of life... and that is what a true 'teacher' is...

    2. well to be honest, i think yes teachers certainly influence the student's life in some way or another. what Lincoln is asking in his letter is to teach his boy a moral values. Teacher not only teaches his only subject in the class but also changing trends of modernization and mostly importantly the values. I m not bluffing. whatever i am right now is my teacher's input. if he have not taught me how to be a good human being than i must be in the street. so i conclude teachers do a lot for the student in shaping their life.

  7. TEACHERS SHOULD TRY TO TEACH LIKE THAT WHAT HAS BEEN SAID,THERE IS NO DOUBT.I WANT TO SAY HOW TO..DO WHAT YOU WANT TO TEACH BEFORE TEACHING BECAUSE THERE IS A LOT OF DIFFERENDE BETWEEN TEACHING AND LEARNING.TEACHING IS HANDED DOWN BUT LEARNING IS TAKEN UP.STUDENTS LEARN ALL SUCH THINGS MORE THAT HOW THE TEACHER IS TEACHING THAN WHAT IS TEACHING.

  11. I respect the thought of mr. Lincoln.
    It seems good........
Though I am also a teacher I think practical implementation of these thoughts is not possible for anyone. Beacuse we can make it possible by keenly observation. Every child is special, according ti individual difference it is not possible for anyone to develop onee's personality as mentioned.I think he'd written this letter to the tutor of his son not a his school teacher. because it is not possible in class room scenario.

  12. i feel there is nothing wrong in what Abraham lincoln expected from his child's teacher. Although its implementation seems to be difficult , nothing is impossible and a teacher should always aim at teaching the values while teaching the subject. The subject can be learnt to some extent by the child himself but the values conveyed through the interaction are registered forever and a student always remembers the teacher for this.

  13. This letter is really inspired, father write to son's teacher to be teach not only the subject but also how to make a good person for the society. All teachers should read and think what there duty to society. Teachers are the backbone of the community.

  14. Teaching is a holiatry and prophetic work. and i think it should be taken like it. the basic objective is to prepare a responsible part of society and its development. teacher and his character is the basic tool to get this objective.so expecting what Lincon said is not some thing surprising. I will further said is that same is the duty of parents.

  23. It's actually not written by Abraham Lincoln, but the value of it is the same, nonetheless. It's commonly, but falsely, credited to him.
